CollabNet had the pleasure of welcoming Ian Murphy from Enterprise Times to our offices earlier this year for a chat about DevOps. We sat down together and discussed how businesses are creating software today, and how they are organizing teams to deliver the most value to customers.
Ian had excellent questions for me about the maturity of the DevOps market and automation of processes, trends in organizational structure and the importance of security in software development—among many other topics.
While many organizations are getting by with traditional siloed development methods, the potential that comes with adapting processes and teams using DevOps strategies can help to skyrocket not only delivery times but also the quality and overall value of products developed.
I enjoyed sharing with Ian my observations from years in the industry about the need for successful companies to embrace change and adopt a new culture. As I mentioned to Ian, when companies start focusing on the consumer of the products that they are creating and placing the highest value on trying to make that customer happy—as opposed to prioritizing a requirement or a particular team, not that those things aren’t important—then the culture changes.
At the end of our time together, Ian asked me about what we can expect to see taking the software development industry by storm in the future, “What’s the next big thing?” Can you guess what I said? I’ll give you a hint, it’s what lies beyond cloud computing … you’ll have to listen for yourself to find out!
